For the people. From the people.

About

Take what you need. Give what you can.

North Iowa Mutual Aid operates on a mutual aid model. This differs from traditional charity with the goal of empowerment.

Mutual aid emphasizes working cooperatively to meet each others needs. It analyzes the causes of systemic issues and builds new social constructs for resolving those issues. Mutual aid is offered to all.

Our mission is to meet the needs of all North Iowans by identifying and amplifying gaps between current services and what people can do to support each other interdependently.

Our focus areas are:

  • reducing food waste

  • providing easy access to fresh, healthy food

  • harm reduction

  • period equity

  • encouraging people to connect with our community

North Iowa Mutual Aid, an Iowa nonprofit corporation, is recognized as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

North Iowa Community Fridge Network

The three main objectives of community fridges:

  1. Eliminate food waste.

  2. Provide easy access to fresh, healthy food.

  3. Encourage people to connect with their community.

How it works:

  1. The Plug: a local business commits to hosting a fridge outside of their establishment to support their community by giving access to food 24/7.

  2. The People: At any of our fridges, community members are encouraged to take what they need and leave what they don’t.

  3. The Produce: Individual households, growers, and businesses will be given the opportunity of placing excess foods (that would have otherwise been thrown out) in our solidarity fridges. This will help reduce food waste and redistribute the resources in our city to stock fridges and feed our neighbors.
